Blogger Social Tip: Use Public Transportation
I've never been to New York City outside of JFK Airport, but I've read enough Economics books to have been tipped to the...ah... interesting real estate challenges in NYC. Apparently it extends to parking, as well, which should come as no surprise.
But $250,000 for a parking spot? Wow. And there's a waiting list. CK says almost no one in NYC has cars. It's no wonder.

Yeah, hardly any of us have cars--the subway is our car ;-). I am SO excited that you will see so, so much of the city over the weekend and you'll be amazed between ALL our friends and all the other people (and cars) we fit here. I'm elated you'll be a Socialite.

Hello Cam,
Here in Istanbul the situation is similar. It's a huge city, but concentrated around well-defined centers and neighborhoods like New York (it even is second only to New York, I've heard, for intra-city water traffic), not sprawling like LA.
Owning a car here isn't necessary, either. The ferry, bus, and metro and tram systems are quite good - the metro is new, clean and growing - and complemented with taxis and other minibus-style types or transport, you can get anywhere you want pretty conveniently, and usually as quickly as with a car and w/o the parking hassles.
But, CK, I do have to say, aside from a few enlightened types like a previous Japanese Consul-General, here "Scocialites" would never use the public transport system. I guess that rules me out here (my other shortcomings would have to do the job in NY).

If you're staying in NYC proper (on Manhattan island) you really don't need a car. If you're staying by friends in the boroughs, you may want to rent a car to get around. Public transportation within NYC itself is great, the farther out you get, the less reliable and regular is becomes.
