We are setting up this blog for several reasons.
- To raise money for the Boy Scouts and Avery's Weblos pack
- To show our appreciation for troops coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan
- To get Avery accustomed to using Web technology
- To build Avery's awareness of the world around him
- To increase his ability to critically analyze and document that world
- To increase Avery's ability to type on a QWERTY keyboard
I have no idea if we'll be successful at any of these goals, but if we are successful at just one of them, it will have been worthwhile.
Of course, with Avery's approval, I set up this blog and decided which elements would be put on here. I will also help Avery come up with topics, edit his posts when needed, and provide moral support until he can do it all by himself. Other than that, it's all on him.
We've been told that our region does not allow scouts to take actual popcorn orders online because of shipping costs and other issues. By using this program, we are circumventing that limitation and contributing to a good cause at the same time. It's a small gesture of support for our heroes, but it's one Avery and I do gladly.
If Avery sells $2,500 worth of popcorn by October 27, he will qualify to start applying a portion of this and all future popcorn sales towards a scholarship fund, which is where the name, "Popcorn Scholar" came from.
Given the costs of higher education and the responsibility each of us has to take measures to improve ourselves as well as support our country and community, I believe this to be a good way to get Avery to think of unique ways to accomplish his goals, and at the same time, demonstrate the rewards of innovation and the generosity of people living in a free nation.
We have our goals set for $2,500 by October 27 to qualify for the scholarship.
100 donations of $25 each would do it (minus whatever take PayPal
gets), but we're not opposed to 500 donations of $5 each, either.
Anything you can give would be greatly appreciated. $5 will, after all, give one bag of popcorn each to five different heroes coming home from Iraq or Afghanistan.
